EE Resource Types - Definitions & Examples

The following definitions and examples are provided to establish a common understanding of the EE resource types used in this searchable database. All resources included in the database should relate to environmental education (EE). It may be appropriate for a resource to be listed as a single resource type or as multiple types.

 ***Please post/find any date-specific programs or one-time events on the calendar of events.***


After School Programs
Youth programs designed to take place on weekdays during the school year and after regular school hours. Parents do not typically attend these programs with their children/students.

  • Club with meetings that take place at school such as 4-H, Junior Master Gardeners, etc.
  • An enrichment program offered at a local EE organization’s location(s)

Camps
Youth “camp” programs offered over a series of days. Chaperones or parents do not typically attend these programs with their children.
  • Day camp
  • Overnight camp
  • Summer camp, spring break camp, winter break camp

Citizen Science Resources

Any programs that involve citizens in monitoring, reporting observations, collecting data, etc. to be used by scientific researchers in answering real-world questions.
  • Local, field-based stream monitoring program such as Adopt-A-Stream
  • Web-based program for reporting wildlife sightings such as Journey North
  • Curriculum, manual, website, etc. used to train citizen scientists

College/University EE Courses

Courses offered by an institute of higher education. Course credit (undergraduate or graduate) is available.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s program in EE, outdoor education, environmental studies, or related field
  • Course (online included) that offers undergraduate or graduate credit(s)

Conferences/Symposia
A gathering offering opportunities to hear speakers, attend seminars, and network with others about EE-related topics.
  • Annual EE, marine education, or science education conference
  • Symposium on EE, outdoor classrooms, native plants, etc.
  • Any EE-related conference, convention, summit, etc.

Consulting Resources

EE-related consultant service.
  • Educational resource development
  • Exhibit design

Contests and Awards
Opportunities to earn prizes, awards, recognition, etc. for EE-related achievements.
  • Art or writing contest
  • Environmental/science fair
  • Teaching award
  • Student achievement award
  • Academic competition

Educational Materials/Curricula

Any resources designed for teaching and/or learning.
  • Lesson/unit plan
  • Curriculum guide (Ex. Project Learning Tree, Project WET, Project WILD, etc.)

Field Trips /Programs
Programs scheduled in advance by school groups, other organizations, or individuals to take place at an EE provider’s site (or other trip destination). Programs may take place during the day or evening, but do not include staying overnight.

Outreach Programs/Speakers

Presenter(s) available to come to a school, park, library, or other location to speak or offer an educational program. Programs must be scheduled in advance by individuals, groups, or organizations.

Public and/or Family Programs

EE programs offered to the general public and/or families, rather than scheduled by individuals, groups, or organizations. Groups of only adults may participate or parents and children participate in the program together.

  • Guided hike, tour, field experience, etc.
  • Family backpacking, camping, or hiking trip
  • Family experience such as a pre-K nature program, “meet an animal” presentation, event for home schools, etc.

Educational program that includes staying overnight one or more nights.

Volunteer or Service Learning Opportunities
Opportunities to give of one’s time and talents to benefit others. Service Learning also includes educational opportunities and personal reflection.
